First Evidence of H5N1 Bird Flu Infecting a Mammal on Mainland Australia

BEACHPORT, AUSTRALIA / RankWire.AI / – Australia has verified the presence of H5N1 bird flu in a long-nosed fur seal discovered deceased in Beachport, South Australia. This marks the inaugural confirmed case of mammal infection linked to the ongoing outbreak on mainland Australia. A member of the public reported the animal on August 19 after it was found without any visible injuries. Following this, authorities collected samples for laboratory analysis. The findings extended the known range of species impacted by the mainland outbreak.

H5N1 bird flu reaches mammal in mainland Australia
South Australia records H5N1 in a fur seal as authorities track infections in wild species.

Initial testing conducted by the state yielded inconclusive results, prompting authorities to perform additional examinations. CSIRO’s Australian Centre for Disease Preparedness subsequently confirmed the presence of H5 bird flu in the seal. Officials clarified that no cluster of sick or dead marine mammals had been identified around Beachport. Situated on South Australia’s Limestone Coast, the town has seen intensified wildlife surveillance during the outbreak. Additionally, authorities have documented infections among several seabird species along the coast and in other affected regions.

By August 23, South Australia had reported 194 confirmed H5 events, including 11 new cases announced on that day. The latest detections involved greater crested terns, a gannet, a little penguin, a silver gull, and a black-faced cormorant. The region now classifies outbreaks as incidents that may involve one or multiple animals at a specific location. Across Australia, authorities had confirmed 298 positive H5 events by Sunday, with South Australia accounting for the majority of these detections.

H5N1 outbreak extends its reach to mainland mammals

The mainland outbreak originated in June 2026, following the detection of H5N1 in migratory seabirds. Subsequent testing identified the virus in native seabirds that do not migrate, such as greater crested terns. During August, South Australia reported over 1,000 dead greater crested terns. The strain circulating within Australia belongs to H5N1 clade 2.3.4.4b, a variant that has previously infected wild birds, poultry, and mammals in various regions outside Australia during recent outbreaks.

There have been no reports of H5 bird flu infections in Australian poultry or other livestock associated with the current outbreak. The Australian Centre for Disease Control continues to evaluate the risk to the general population as low. Australia has also not documented any locally acquired human cases related to the strain currently circulating among wildlife. Health officials recommend avoiding direct contact with sick or dead animals. They also advise reporting unusual wildlife deaths so authorities can facilitate testing and ongoing monitoring.

Previous seal infections detected on Heard Island

Australia initially confirmed H5N1 in southern elephant seals on Heard Island, an external territory located in the Southern Ocean. These laboratory results were announced in November 2025, several months prior to the virus reaching mainland Australia. Later investigations revealed H5 bird flu in additional wildlife on the island, including Antarctic fur seals and gentoo penguins. Consequently, the Beachport fur seal represents the first confirmed mammal infection associated with Australia’s current mainland H5N1 outbreak and the first such detection in a native mammal on the mainland.

Monitoring of coastal wildlife continues as H5N1 spreads among seabirds in different parts of Australia. The public is urged to keep their distance from sick or deceased birds and marine mammals. Authorities also encourage recording locations and reporting abnormal animal deaths to animal health officials. These reports aid in testing efforts and tracking the distribution of confirmed cases. The Beachport incident adds a mammal to the expanding list of wildlife species affected during Australia’s ongoing mainland H5N1 bird flu outbreak.
